The Play

Set in the 17th century, Les Précieuses Ridicules (The Pretentious Young Ladies) is the story of two cousins, who, attracted by the pomp & show of the pretentious rich, insult the suitors who come to ask their hand in marriage. How these two men fool the girls into believing that their servants are rich noblemen and the ridiculous situations which ensue form the crux of the play. The girls' custodian, the irrepressible servant of the household and many other characters mesh into the play in the inimitable style of Molière.

The Playwright

Molière (1622-1673) educated at the Collège de Lermont, in the Paris, founded a dramatic troupe called the Illustrious Theatre, at the age of twenty-one. His first important play was L'Etourdi or The Blunderer, A five-act piece. Molière's abundant success in satirical theatre between 1658 and 1672, earned his theatre group the coveted title of "Troupe of the King". Of his many plays Les Précieuses Ridicules was Molière's first major success in the year 1659. Some of his greatest plays include The Misanthrope, The Doctor In Spite Of Himself, Tartuffe, and The Imaginary Invalid. Molière left behind a body of work, which not only changed the face of French classical comedy, but has also gone on to influence the work of other dramatists the world over.
